Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (PGCB) is responsible for countrywide high voltage power transmission. Previously PGCB used earth wire/ground wire to protect the transmission line from thundering. Before 2008 PGCB used analog PLC (Power Line Carriers) based technology for telecommunication, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and power transmission system protection. After 2008, PGCB adopted new optical fiber based communication technology replacing the prevalent ground wire by modern OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) with modern digital communication system for reliable and faster telecommunication, SCADA and system protection.

Till June 2020, PGCB has installed around 6500 km of OPGW across the country along with its high voltage transmission lines. Besides, PGCB's own needs, the unused optical fibers are being leased out under approved rate and standard agreement to local telecommunication operators to develop national communication infrastructure.

Some information about optical fiber leasing is given below:

  1. PGCB has obtained NTTN (Nationwide Telecommunication Transmission Network) license in 2005.
  2. Total 08 (eight) organizations including other NTTN license holders and Mobile network operators are using PGCB’s OPGW under leasing agreement.
  3. Total 17236 km of optical fiber core has been leased till December 2020.
  4. Dark optical fiber lease rate is:
